Twenty years ago eleven year old best friends Charlie and Scott were brutally murdered and left for dead. At the time the case seemed to be open and shut when a local man was arrested and convicted of the murders.
Now, twenty years later Cody Swift is still deeply troubled by the deaths of his two best friends. He cannot forget he was supposed to be with them that fateful night. He has long felt that the police did not investigate the case properly and that they did not get the right man. Due to a development the police ignore he decides to start a podcast and his own investigation into the murders.
Soon another body is found in the same lot the boys were discovered in twenty years prior. Is there a connection between this new body and the boy murder so many years before?
I really enjoyed this story, though it is a rough subject matter to read. It is told in alternating points of view from the main investing detective, Charlie’s mother, and Cody’s podcast. I thought that including the podcast was cleaver because it was a way of exploring the past while staying in the present. I have not read a book with this type of transcript in it before.
Though I enjoyed this book, I did find the writing to be a bit choppy, and therefore a bit distracting. This did not take away from my enjoying the story itself, but I did struggle with it a bit at first as I felt the flow was a bit off.
