Title: The House Swap
Author: Rebecca Fleet
Edition: Ebook
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Publication Date: May 22, 2018
I had never heard of this house swap thing until I saw the movie The Holiday with Kate Winslet a few years ago. Even so, I did not realize this was a real thing people did in real life. I don’t know how other people feel about this, but the idea of a stranger living in my house while I am not there, or even while I am there, is a bit creepy to me. This book has not helped in warming me up to this idea.
Caroline and Francis have had a rough couple of years, what with his pill addiction and her affair, but they are finally ready to try to recover and repair their marriage. Wanting to get away on a vacation to reconnect Caroline locates a house swap opportunity for them, so they leave their son with her mother and hit the road.
Once they arrive at the house they find it oddly sparse, like a model home. As time goes on Caroline begins to notice odd things around the house, the neighbor that somehow reminds her of herself and begins to suspects that things may not be as they seem. Who has she let into their house and what do they want?
The House Swap is a slow burning thriller told in dual time-line fashion. As I have said before, I really enjoy these dual time-line stories because they have a way of slowly peeling back the story and can really show you the true nature of the character.
The story is told mainly though the perspective of Caroline though there are a few sections where we see Francis’ perspective as well as that of the person staying in their house
I must admit in reading the first part of this book I was a little bored, but once it got going I was hooked! I wanted to know who is that house?!? I was stumped until the end, the mark of a good mystery. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys creepy domestic thrillers.
Thank you to Penguin First to Read of this eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
